Double vs Triple Glazing, Where the Extra Pane Pays

Triple glazing is genuinely better than double, and it is still the wrong purchase for plenty of houses. The difference between those two statements is where the money goes, so this guide is about the situations rather than the sales pitch.

What the third pane actually does

A triple glazed unit adds a pane and a second cavity, which raises the temperature of the innermost surface of the glass. That surface temperature is what you feel when you sit near a window on a cold night, and it is what dictates whether condensation forms on the inside. Lifting it a few degrees changes how a room feels far more than the headline U value suggests.

It also adds weight. A triple unit is roughly half as heavy again as a double, which is why the frame profile and the hinges have to be specified for it. Dropping triple units into a frame designed for double is the single most common reason triple glazed windows start dropping and catching within a couple of years.

Noise, where the answer surprises people

Triple glazing is not automatically better for noise. Sound reduction comes from unequal pane thicknesses and a wide cavity, so a well chosen acoustic double glazed unit with a 6mm outer pane and a 4mm inner can outperform a symmetrical triple unit against traffic noise. If your main problem is the A470 or the A467 rather than the cold, we will often quote acoustic double rather than triple, and it usually costs less.

When triple glazing is worth it

There is a clear pattern in the houses where the upgrade earns its keep.

  • Exposed hillside and high ground properties with nothing breaking the wind
  • North facing elevations that never get sun on the glass
  • Rooms with a large glazed area relative to floor space, such as a bedroom with a full bay
  • Homes where someone sits still near a window for hours, including home offices
  • New builds and deep retrofits where the rest of the fabric is already well insulated

When it is not worth it

If your walls are solid stone with no insulation, or your loft is thin, the heat is leaving elsewhere and triple glazing will not fix that. If the windows are sheltered, south facing and you are replacing sound A rated double glazing, the payback runs longer than the sealed units are guaranteed for. We would rather tell you that at the survey than sell you the upgrade.

Common questions

How much more does triple glazing cost than double?

Expect a meaningful uplift per window rather than a token one, because you are buying an extra pane, an extra spacer, gas fill in two cavities, a deeper frame and heavier hardware. We price both side by side on the same quote so you can see the gap for your own house.

Will triple glazing stop condensation?

Internal condensation, usually yes, because the inner pane stays warmer than the dew point. You may then see occasional condensation on the outside of the glass on cold clear mornings, which is a sign the unit is working and not a fault.

Do I need new frames for triple glazing?

In almost every case yes. The unit is thicker and heavier, so it needs a deeper profile and hinges rated for the sash weight. This is why we do not retrofit triple units into existing frames.

Is triple glazing worth it in Cardiff?

On exposed or north facing Cardiff properties and on anything near a main road where you also want warmth, yes. On sheltered suburban semis with recent double glazing, we usually advise spending the money on the rear elevation and the doors instead.
