Composite Door Cost, and What Actually Changes It

A composite front door is one job, one day and one decision, which makes it a very different purchase from a whole house of windows. The price is driven by the size of the hole in the wall and by four or five choices you make about the slab, the glass, the hardware and the frame around it.

The five things that move the price

Strip out the marketing and a composite door quote comes down to these.

  • Slab size, because anything above a standard 838mm by 1981mm leaf is a special
  • Sidelights and top lights, which turn a door into a door and frame assembly
  • Glass, from plain obscure through to bevelled, leaded or stained designs
  • Hardware, where brass and matt black sets sit above standard chrome
  • Frame work, meaning whether the existing opening takes a straight swap or needs squaring, a new cill or brickwork made good

Where people overspend and where they underspend

The most common overspend is decorative glass on a door that faces a busy pavement, where an obscure level 4 or 5 panel would have done the same job for less and given more privacy. The most common underspend is the cylinder. A door slab is rarely the weak point in a break in, the lock barrel is, and a three star anti snap cylinder costs very little on top of the total.

The second underspend is the threshold. A low aluminium threshold with a proper drainage detail costs a little more than a basic one and prevents the wind driven rain problem that so many South Wales front doors suffer with.

What is in our fitted price

Supply of the door and frame made to your measured opening, removal and disposal of the old door, fitting, sealing inside and out, making good the reveal, all hardware fitted and adjusted, and the keys handed over working smoothly rather than needing a shoulder. There is nothing added on the day. The price on the written quote is the price you pay.

Common questions

Is a composite door worth more than a uPVC one?

For a front door, usually yes. You are buying a solid core that resists a kick, a colour that runs through the skin and a hallway that stops feeling cold. For a back door out of a utility room, a good uPVC door is often the sensible choice and we will say so.

Does a bigger opening cost much more?

It steps rather than climbs smoothly. Anything within standard leaf sizes is priced normally, and once you go beyond that into a made to measure slab or a door with sidelights, the frame and glass costs step up together.

Can I keep my existing frame to save money?

We do not recommend it and we rarely quote it. The frame is where the weather seal, the keeps for the lock and the alignment all live, so fitting a new slab into a tired frame gives you a new looking door with all the old problems still in place.

How long before the door is fitted?

Manufacture is typically a few weeks from the point the order is confirmed, then the fitting itself is a single day, usually four to six hours.
